While hiking the wildcats this weekend I spotted a spruce grouse in the middle of the trail before reaching Wildcat A. I have run into many spruce grouse families on the Twinway trail in between Zealand Mountain and Guyot as well. It's nice to see them once in a while but they usually give me a scare since they wait until the last moment to flush!

On 6/29/2010 while on the north side of Bald Hill Rd. I encountered two black bears. I was able to watch them for about ten minutes before they disappeared into the mountain laurel. Black bears have also recently been spotted crossing Bald Hill Rd. near the center so drive slowly and keep your eyes open!

We have heard coyotes chorusing many times over this summer, mostly at night but twice at 9:30am. We have seen them 3 times in the past 4 days in our fields. Have others been seeing them more than usual?

Lori saw the first woodcock this year on March 19th in Jackson. SHE FLUSHED IT FROM A PIECE OF BARE GROUND BEHIND HER HOUSE. The turkey vultures were out in force on that Saturday as well. Snow geese on McNeil Road in North Fryeburg, probably 150-200 with Canada geese. I saw a junco under my feeder today (3/21). First I've see all winter. On Sunday (3/20) there were about 100 red-wing blackbirds behind the Fryeburg Academy Alumni Building. Also started seeing many robins on Friday (3/18).

Shortly after submitting my post,a Chipping Sparrow put in an appearance. It is FOY (first of the year) for me. On Sunday I had great looks at a Golden-crowned Kinglet actually displaying its crown. On 04/07 I heard and saw an American Woodcock displaying in the field behind Conway Elementary. An Eastern Phoebe put in appearance on 04/03 in the yard. I saw my first butterfly of the spring-a Mourning Cloak-on 04/08. Don't you just love Spring?

We had two great field trips - one to the bog birding and the other to Humphrey's Ledge for spring wildflowers. Also, I just saw a red fox walikg down the Bald Hill Rd from my office window. It headed off down the steep bank to the north.

Lori will post the flowers and birds from the Bog and Ledge. BUT, I heard and saw a Louisiana waterthrush twice on Saturday at the north eand of Chase Pond. He was hanging out in the heavily timbered (by beavers) area between the bridge and the boardwalk. He made lots of call note, but only sang once. Saw him doing the exaggerated tail bob. Possible goshawk in Chatham. I'll keep you posted.

If you haven't had a chance to see the snow buntings and horned larks in North Fryeburg, check them out at the horse farm on Cornshop Road. They are are throughout the paddock area and beyond. Lots of red polls this year and a few tree sparrows. I haven't noticed any pine siskins; anyone else had any. Good crop of evening grosbecks in Jackson. We've had Bohemian waxwings off and on at the Tin Mountain Conservation Center. Others have seen them throughout the Valley on fruit trees. Has anyone seen crossbills or pine grosbecks?

Arrived at my folks' house in Methuen, MA this afternoon following a workshop this morning in Southern, NH. Pulling out of the driveway with my Mom, looked up to see a Bald Eagle flying at perhaps 40 feet carrying entrails of something good-sized.
The bird flew over the house and along Rte. 495 South for a ways. The Merrimack River is directly beyond the highway and eagles are often seen just North a few miles in Haverhill, MA and a couple of miles south in Lawrence along the old industrial stretch of the river. I've seen a lot of bald eagles over the years, but this was an absolutely breath-taking and surprising encounter!

We also saw a red fox with manage and a bald eagle sitting on a branch about the river. Rain, but nobody noticed.

There is a great mountain-ash with bobcat clawing behind the Tin Mountain Center on Bald Hill Road. Rick VdP and company spotted it last Saturday. It looks just like the ones you see on the web. Stop by and we'll tell you the general vicinity. You can go try to find it.

Last Saturday was a great day for tracking despite the snowfall over night. Lots of turkeys, grouse, ermine, red fox, and a few fisher tracks. Interesting not to see so many fresh shoeshoe hare and small rodent tracks. Rick was a wealth of information. Very impressive that he was able to digg around the melted area of two trees to fine ermine scat. He was two for two. I look forward to hearing from Ted Levin during next month's sessions.

There was a beautiful Fox Sparrow who spent at least 15 minutes scratching in the garden. I was able to count at least 113 Dark-eyed Juncos as they flew into the yard from across the street. I think the actual number is higher because my field of view was limited. There were at least 30 bedraggled looking Common Redpolls on and under the feeders. A Song Sparrow was present as well. Not bad for a rainy day!

It is very impressive that so many people in the Valley are interested in putting in solar hot water systems by taking advantage of Tin Mountain's Renewable Energy Initiative using the "solar raiser" model. It's similar to barn raisers, but we put together a solar hot water system in one day. It also is helped by the rebates available for systems. If you are intersted, you should check it out.
