AIL NORA TO BE PUT ON THE WAITLIST\n\nOne of the finest places in New Engl
and to see towering Eastern white pines is Big Pines Natural Area in Tamwo
rth\, NH. One champion tree is over 150 feet tall and has a circumference
of over 15 feet. Walking in this cathedral-like forest with numerous Easte
rn white pines and hemlocks exceeding 130 feet tall is a star attraction.
This 170-acre Big Pines Natural Area at Hemenway State Forest was recently
inducted into the Old-growth Forest Network because of its exemplary cond
ition.\n\nOur hike\, considered moderate and 2.2 miles long with an elevat
ion change of 600 feet\, is not just a walk in the woods. It's an educatio
nal journey. We will stop along the way to examine the physical characteri
stics that make this an old-growth forest. We will delve into the fascinat
ing history of Augustus and Harriet Hemenway\, who donated nearly two thou
sand acres to New Hampshire to be Hemenway State Forest. We will have lunc
h at Great Hill Fire Tower\, a perfect spot to discuss what we've learned
and enjoy the fine views of the White Mountains.\n\nBring water\, lunch\,
 a pencil\, and clothing for the weather. Binoculars\, a camera\, and a han
 d lens are helpful.\n
