One of the finest places in New England to see towering Eastern white pines is Big Pines Natural Area in Tamworth, NH. One champion tree is over 150 feet tall and has a circumference of over 15 feet. Walking in this cathedral-like forest with numerous Eastern white pines and hemlocks exceeding 130 feet tall is a star attraction. This 170-acre Big Pines Natural Area at Hemenway State Forest was recently inducted into the Old-growth Forest Network because of its exemplary condition.
Our hike, considered moderate and 2.2 miles long with an elevation change of 600 feet, is not just a walk in the woods. It's an educational journey. We will stop along the way to examine the physical characteristics that make this an old-growth forest. We will delve into the fascinating history of Augustus and Harriet Hemenway, who donated nearly two thousand acres to New Hampshire to be Hemenway State Forest. We will have lunch at Great Hill Fire Tower, a perfect spot to discuss what we've learned and enjoy the fine views of the White Mountains.
Bring water, lunch, a pencil, and clothing for the weather. Binoculars, a camera, and a hand lens are helpful.
